Driving Permits

Before an individual can obtain a valid drivers license they have to obtain a learners permit. The age for this is different by state but it is generally about years of age. The individual will need to have the written consent of their parents to obtain one. They will also need a photo ID and proof of their age. Most drivers license offices will only accept an original birth certificate to verify the age of a person.

At the time when a person gets their drivers permit they may have to pass a written test. In some states this is reserved until they actually have to take the test for the real license. A permit gives the individual the opportunity to drive with certain conditions. They too will vary by state so you have to be aware of them. For example there must be a licensed driver in the car over the age of in most states. There are also restrictions as to the time of day that the person can drive and how many other people can be in the vehicle with them.

Due to so many accidents involving new drivers, many states have now started to require parents to keep a log of the hours they drive. There are a set number of daytime and night time hours that the student must complete before they can get their license. Should you enroll your child in drivers education classes, this log will be completed by their instructor.

There are times when adults have their driving privileges revoked as well. This can be due to not paying fines as well as drinking and driving. They may be given a driving permit that allows them specific access only. This means they have a drivers license but with restrictions. For example they may be able to drive to and from work only. If they are found violating that they will lose all their driving privileges.

A driving permit can be a stepping stone to getting something more substantial. There are various rules and guidelines that apply to it. Make sure you are aware of them and that you follow them. For many young people, getting a driving permit is very exciting. They cant wait for the day when they will be able to hit the open road on their own.
