Fighting Identity Theft

Identity theft is a growing concern today. There are many ways that people can steal your identity and use your good name for their personal gain. Unfortunately, many of them get away without any repercussions. And they leave you to foot the bill! Here are some ways to help you fight identity theft and avoid having someone else ruin your good credit rating and keep you from getting the loan or mortgage you want to get. The first thing you want do is be careful how much information you give out on the Internet. For example, never put your credit card number into an e-mail. If you do make purchases online (and there is nothing wrong with that), you need to be careful. One way to be extra careful is to only use sites that offer a high level of encryption. Another way to be extra careful is to only use one credit card for all of your Internet purchases and make sure that credit card has a low limit. If you do that, no one will be able to ruin your credit rating even if they max out your credit card because the limit is so low! Another thing you want to do to help you avoid identity theft is to shred all your outgoing mail. You'll be amazed at how much information is available about you that simply gets trashed. Some thieves will pick up your garbage, rummage through the trash, and pull out the credit card offers that you threw away because they were junk mail. A lot of your information is already on there and all the thieves have to do is forge your signature and mail it away with a note that says you've changed your mailing address (to their address). The third thing you want to do to avoid identity theft is to make sure that your mailbox is safe. One of the best options for you to have is a slot in your front door for the mail to fall through. Even that is not completely safe, but it is still much safer than the post box outside your front door or hanging on your fence. The safest box you can have is a locked postal box that you rent. If you live in a neighborhood that has lots of crime you may want to consider this extra expense as a way to protect yourself. Why this talk about identity theft on a site about loans? Because if someone steals your identity they can get loans based on your credit rating and they will disappear with the goods while you get stuck with a bad credit report.
