Economically they struggle to pay for the crops they need by exporting them. If they cant afford to do so then the people of their country may have to go without essential nutrients.

With the efforts of genetically modified crops they can also hold up better to the elements. There is less of a chance of rotting and of poor crop quality. All of these things can help ensure the supply is in place to meet the demand. They can also help reduce the cost that the consumer has to pay for their food items. Shipping wont have to be done so rapidly with some crops in order to prevent them from rotting.

Yet many people believe it is ethically wrong to mess with the DNA of crops. They worry that this is going to give mad scientists the ability to create crops that can be harmful to people. They also worry that this type of technology will one day be used to alter the DNA of humans. With the story lines of many science fiction movies and books out there though this isnt too far of a leap for a person to make in their own mind.
