Native American Flutes

Native American Flutes

Music is a very significant and powerful symbol of Native Americans. They have always loved to use instruments and to bring music to their lives in various forms. Flutes are one of the many types of instruments that Native Americans have made since the beginning of time. The very early ones were hand carved from the bones of animals they killed for food and for their skins.

As the time periods moved on some of the Native Americans began making the flutes out of wood instead of bone. The also hand decorated them and giving another Indian a flute was a sign of affection and admiration. Many of the Indians would play their own flutes to soothe their soul at night before going to bed. It was believed that they would be safe from the images of their dreams if they were in a relaxed frame of mind before they went to sleep.

It is believed that the white men found out about the flute during their many interactions with the Native Americans. Many were very impressed by the look of the various flutes. They were also very interested in the sounds they were able to make. It didnt take long before they were bartering with the Indians to be able to own one of these flutes. Of course many of them were simply taken as the white men invaded the lands and took everything they wanted.

One of the main differences between the flutes from the Native Americans and other models is that they feature two air chambers. It is this distinction that offers the very unique sound from these types of flutes. You will also notice that the length of Native American flutes are very different. This was initially though to be for sound variations but that isnt right. Each one was made to fit the player so it is the length that is right for the distance from under their arm to their wrist.

If you are interested in hearing the difference between the sounds from a Native American flute and others you can play the sounds online. If you are familiar with how a traditional flute sounds you will quickly notice the differences. Most people really enjoy the sound of a Native American flute though.
