Orphans

Orphans are individuals that no longer have either one of their parents around to care for them. In some cultures this means that their parents have died but that isnt always the case. In places such as China most families can only have one child. Since they often want it to be a boy, little girls are often left abandoned at the hospital upon their birth. Many babies in Russia are abandoned as well due to the family not being able to care for them.

An orphanage is a location where these children are cared for and raised. This is often done by non profit organizations and by churches. They strive to make sure each child has a bed to sleep in and food to eat. Yet many orphanages are very poor and they rely on generous donations to keep them operating. Many have issues with overcrowding and inadequate supplies. There have also been reports of poor quality of care and even abuse in some of these facilities.

Orphans are often placed for adoption with families that wish to take them in. The older a child is though the harder it is to place them. Most couples looking to adopt an orphan want an infant or a small child. This way they can raise the child from a very early age. Many children in orphanages have physical disabilities, mental health problems, anger issues, and behavior problems. It can be extremely difficult for a couple to decide to adopt a child with such qualities.

In some countries there arent such facilities for children to live in. Orphans are often left to fend for themselves. They wonder around in the villages and on the streets. This may seem surreal to those of us that cant imagine a child out there without an adult to care for them. As uneasy as the concept may be to accept though, it does happen in many areas. With the number of people in Africa that die from the AIDS epidemic, orphans living on their own are very common place.

You can do plenty to help orphans to have a better life. You can donate money, food, or supplies to various orphanages. You can also look into the process for adopting an orphan and bring them to be a part of your own home.
