Salmonella

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that is often associated with food poisoning. It can result in people becoming extremely ill. In some cases it can even result in death. Anyone that has ever suffered from food poisoning will tell you it is not pleasant. It is much more violent than just the flu. In many instances salmonella is detected when a family or a group of people that have all eaten at the same place become very ill.

The onset of salmonella doesnt happen right away. It can take place a few hours after a person has eaten foods with the bacteria in it. In some instances the food poisoning doesnt show up for a full three days. This makes it harder to track it back to the source. Once the symptoms start a person may be violently ill for up to seven days. It depends on the person and how much of the bacteria they have been exposed to.

Salmonella has been tracked back to various types of restaurants from time to time. There have also been food recalls from items you can get at the grocery store due to it. The key is to get the word out immediately to help prevent more people from becoming ill. This is why so many companies have product codes on their foods. By letting the public know which codes may be infected with the salmonella they can encourage consumers to throw it out.

It is very important for a person to seek immediate medical treatment if they fear they may have salmonella. A course of antibiotics can help to offset the full effects of it. Some individuals have to be hospitalized for a couple of days in order to ensure a full recovery. Young children and the elderly are the most likely to die from salmonella without proper medical care.

Should you test positive for salmonella, it is important for you to provide as much information as you can. This will allow health officials to track down the source of the bacteria. It may be food items in your home, that you had at a large gathering, or you consumed at a restaurant. Their goal will to be to get in touch with others that may be infected as well.
