Tiger Mosquitoes

Tiger Mosquitoes

The scientific name for the Tiger Mosquito is Aedes Albopictus but it gets the more familiar name due to the color and design of it. This is a very large type of mosquito that has black and white stripes on its body. Most Tiger Mosquitoes are found in Asia but some have also been discovered in areas of Korea, the United States, and Canada. This is the species of mosquito that is known to carry the parasites that cause Malaria.

The female tiger mosquitoes are the ones that carry the parasites though, not the males. They are constantly in search of blood to feed on so they can produce enough protein to lay their eggs. These eggs are laid in shallow areas of water where they will continue to stay warm enough until they hatch. A single tiger mosquito can hatch from to eggs at one time.

It is very difficult to control the population of tiger mosquitoes though. They tend to be able to adapt to their environment with ease. They have been known to live in the warm areas as well as the cool air of the mountains. They are also aggressive enough that they will bite people any time of the day so if you arent prepared mid afternoon you just might offer them a meal they are impressed with.

Tiger mosquitoes have also been known to become resistant to insecticides and chemicals used to control them. This means that future generations of these types of mosquitoes will be even harder to get rid of than they are now. One way to help control the amount of them is to kill the eggs while they are still in the water.

Many individuals traveling to other countries are encouraged to get a vaccine for Malaria due to the possibility of being bitten by tiger mosquitoes. They are also asked to take Malaria tablets daily for approximately days. The symptoms of Malaria may not show up for two or three weeks after a person has been infected. They often resemble the symptoms of the flu so a person needs to really be paying attention to what has taken place in order to get proper treatment.
